Important Hurricane Irene information
TOWNSHIP OF CLINTON
OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
As a result of the storm, the South Branch of the Raritan River is currently projected to flood with a crest of 12.3’ in Stanton, 4.3’ ABOVE our flood stage of 8.0’. This would be seen in the afternoon of Monday, 8/29/11. This is based on a National Weather Service (NWS) projection of Saturday, 8/27/11, at 10:15 AM. This projection may change up or down as the storm gets closer and passes.
A point of reference, with the flood of 1999, Hurricane Floyd, we reached a crest of 13.90’, or 1.6’ above the current projection of 12.3’.
If this projection holds, evacuations of various areas of Clinton Township will be called for later. If called for, self evacuation to out of area family and friends would be appreciated as this would leave the limited public shelter space available for others. Please make sure you move your vehicles to higher ground.
Begin these arrangements soon. A regional American Red Cross Shelter is being established starting at 4:00 PM this evening, Saturday, 8/27/11, at the J. P. Case Middle School at 301 Case Boulevard in Flemington. Since this is such a major, state-wide event, the Red Cross did not have the resources to support a more local shelter for us. We are sure you understand the situation.
Please monitor the river and the media for updates. Please do not call 911 for any non-emergency
problems. If an evacuation is needed in your area you will be notified by police, fire, rescue or emergency management personnel.
Municipal Hall will not open until Monday unless it is required as a result of the hurricane. Our
Emergency Operations Center will not be opening until Sunday morning.
We are giving this advance notice to allow you to move valuables to higher levels if you are in a flood-prone area and so desire. Please remember this is only an advisory based upon projections.
FOR ALL NON-EMRGENCY AND STORM RELATED ISSUES PLEASE CALL 908-735-7233. HIGH VOLUMES OF CALLS WILL CREATE BUSY SIGNALS SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. FOR ALL OTHER EMERGENCIES PLEASE DIAL 911.
